DORETTA
When Doretta Pendergrass joined the RISE program, she was scared, unsure, and newly separated. Her life had changed dramatically, and she realized she had not managed bills or budgeting in a very long time. She lacked confidence in her ability to navigate these new responsibilities and doubted whether she could financially support herself. As she describes it, she was both “broke and broken.”
Since joining RISE, Doretta has gained practical knowledge in budgeting, saving, credit, taxes, and essential life skills she had forgotten or never learned. The program has supported her in additional ways as well—helping her secure affordable housing, addressing transportation needs, and building a healthier social life through community and networking.
Through RISE, she has discovered that confidence and independence work hand in hand, and that strong community connections can make a profound difference. Mentors like Patricia Deck and Missy Hayward have been a blessing to her. They help her think through challenges that initially feel overwhelming, offering guidance that turns what once seemed like mountains into manageable tasks. With clear steps and a plan of action, Doretta has learned that she can not only overcome obstacles but accomplish things she never imagined possible.
Doretta is proud of her progress—maintaining her bills, keeping a small savings, and growing in independence and accountability. She is currently seeking better employment and recently completed the resume-building and job-search class. As she continues in the program, she is excited to see what more she can achieve and remains deeply grateful for the support she has received.
